Josh Schertz comments on contract extension news after SLU's victory
'It's been everything I thought and more'
Josh Schertz couldn’t comment on the news that he had agreed to terms of a multi-year contract extension until after SLU had defeated George Washington on Saturday.
When asked what he thought of the timing of the news less than an hour before tip-off, he delivered a classic Schertz response.
“Well, obviously the players were much inspired,” he said, referring to SLU’s 21-point deficit in the first half. “They were trying to get me fired before I signed it, right? I guess that shows how they feel about me.”
The deal remains to be inked. The news of the agreed-upon terms, though, wasn’t a huge surprise given statements made by Schertz and athletic director Chris May in the previous week.
May, president Dr. Edward Feser and chairman of the board of trustees Eric Engler have been in Pittsburgh this week.
“I came to Saint Louis and I had really high expectations for what I thought it could be in terms of commitment of people and infrastructure,” Schertz said after the game. “It’s been everything I thought and more.
“Those relationships that I have with those people are really high level. Like I said, the board is super committed. Dr. Feser is committed. Chris is committed. I think when you have that, you feel like people value you and they feel like you bring value. So, I’m very honored and humbled that their commitment has been elite.
“It’s been from when I got there. Saint Louis has done (things) to try to continue to make this job better and better and better. We’re just scratching the surface of what it can be. I think we’ve got a good run ahead of us, hopefully this year but certainly in the years to come.”
